Advent Begins

This Sunday begins the season of Advent when we anticipate the birth of the promised Savior, Jesus. Church members place poinsettias in the church each year during December in memory or honor of loved ones, or in honor of the Lord.

Our Lessons and Carols Service will be on Sunday, December 20th, at 6:00 p.m. We ask that you wear a mask while inside our building, and maintain social distancing. We hope you'll join us!

Happy New Year

A rare snowfall has come to Pamlico County, and our church looks lovely and peaceful this late Christmas season.

Our church enjoyed the usual round of events during Christmastime -- serving cookies and hot cider to the very-cold folks at Oriental's town dock during Spirit of Christmas's star-lighting; sending out about 35 Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes around the world; our annual Lessons and Carols service, a beautiful candlelight service with Scripture readings, carol singing, and special music; a reception following that service for everyone with hot cider, punch, and savory and sweet snacks; and participation in the many lovely events in Oriental at other churches.

We hope all our friends near and far have experienced the blessing of again recognizing the wonder of Jesus's birth, of God's rescue plan for lost sinners, of the joy that is ours because of the baby in Mary's arms. May God bless you in this new year!

He Is Risen!

Oriental's Easter Sunrise Service was gray and drizzly, but many worshipers gathered by the river to celebrate their living Savior, risen from the dead for their salvation.

As the sky brightened the service began very simply -- light rain prevented
d any electronics.

Pastor Adam preached the homily, and Mary Kathryn led the music.
Later Pamlico Presbyterian enjoyed its own Easter service. The hand chime choir played "Christ the Lord Is Risen Today." Beautiful lilies scented the sanctuary, and graced the communion table.

A Satisfying Seder Meal

Last night our congregation gathered in the fellowship hall for a time of sharing, eating, and learning.

The fruit of the vine and the unleavened bread

 Pastor Adam took us through the Seder, with all its cups of juice and nibbles of unleavened bread, horseradish, parsley, and dates. The readings -- by him, by Joyce (the evening's Jewish "mother"), by the people gathered -- were meaningful and enriching.

 By participating in the meal we learned so much about the Jewish people and their traditions, about how Jesus observed this meal, and especially which cup, with the matza bread, Jesus offered as His body and blood. What a fascinating experience!
We also brought food for a covered dish meal. The ladies busily prepared it all.

 Pastor Adam wore his apron for all that cooking.

 The Seder involved children often, all through the meal, and they enjoyed helping.

The Seder Supper is quite interactive, with lots of tasting, explaining, and reading aloud. Thank you, everyone, for coming and enjoying this with us! We feel even more ready for the Easter season this year.

(Maundy Thursday, the Thursday before Easter).

The meal will be in our fellowship hall.

Have you ever wondered how the Jewish Passover became the Last Supper?

Or how the Last Supper became our modern Communion?

Come participate in a Seder meal, where Pastor Adam will show us, around the table, how the meal was done and what all the components of the meal mean.

This evening will also include a regular covered dish meal, so you won't go home hungry!

Everyone is welcome -- it will be fun, interesting and delicious!

A Lovely Service

We had a truly beautiful, peaceful, worshipful, joyous Lessons and Carols Service this year. Many thanks to everyone who attended and made it such a lovely evening.

The poinsettias warmed the sanctuary with their deep red color.

After the service rich with beloved carols and sacred Scripture readings, everyone enjoyed delicious refreshments in the fellowship hall. Many stayed for over an hour, chatting and visiting.

Our hand chime choir played two numbers, and we enjoyed several special solos from musicians.

Memorial for Lea

Early Saturday morning, the Lord called Lea Braught home to be with Him. Lea is a dear saint, a precious woman, a cherished wife. She is dearly missed by us all.

This photo was taken on Thanksgiving, 2012. Lea battled cancer and other ailments for several years. Yes, she was uncomplaining and faithfully asked about the welfare of others. We pray for Dave, her husband, as he lives now without her.
A memorial service for Lea will be held at the church on Wednesday, September 9, at 11:00 a.m. All are invited to attend.

The Jubilee! Thirty Years of God's Faithfulness

This weekend Pamlico Presbyterian Church celebrated thirty years of God's goodness and faithfulness to us. Through challenges, conflicts, joys, and many seasons of life-- He has remained the focus of our fellowship. We're so thankful that He's sustained our church all these years!
We had a good old-fashioned pig pickin' on Saturday. The men who did the pig arrived at 7:30 AM. The ladies came a bit later. There was plenty of work to do.

Edrae, Joyce, and Jeannette get the deep fryer ship-shape.

Jill and Shane did so much work to make the Jubilee celebration happen.
We're very thankful for them, their sweet spirit of helpfulness, and their smiles.

Willy, Cricket, and Dot enjoyed a front row seat by the pig cooker.

Our friend Art came from out of town for the day and took pictures.

Morgan, Adrianna, and Julia had fun in the beautiful weather.

Jill, Jennifer, and Jordane organized the kids' face painting and bracelet activities.

These tables were a hit with girls, young and old.

A group of active boys enjoyed the pumpkin bowling.

The pumpkins were a little worse for the wear!

But they knocked down all the pins!

The dress-up photo booth was a hoot. Here's Edrae.

We won't reveal the identity of this grandmother-turned-galactic-villain.

Bette looks classy no matter what she's wearing.

Jordane is all about her kitty cats.

Jill did an instant hair change.

Art's flannel shirt blended right in.

And some outfits were just plain silly.

Morgan sports a cowboy hat rather well.

And what would our day have been like, without adorable Steven to keep us laughing?

Back to the food! The pig was laid out in a massive cast iron cooker for the day, skin side down.

A smaller grill was used for cooking the chicken quarters.

Twenty minutes before serving time, the pig looked like this! The men removed, by hand, all the bones and flesh, and the skin was left on the heat. Several folks enjoyed the ribs with meat attached, and later the skin became "cracklings," salty and very good.

Shane took the meat that Joe had scooped out and given to him, and chopped it up for serving. A spicy vinegar-based dressing livened up the meat, which some ate straight, and some put on buns.
Adam's chickens were delicious.

Here are the men, laboring over the heat at the last minute. They also made hush puppies in a deep fryer. Every single hush puppy was eaten -- they were fabulous!

The ladies set up the serving line in the corridor between the two buildings.

Autumn decorations abounded.

Everyone filed through the sanctuary, along the line, and proceeded to tables both outside and inside.

The air conditioning was inviting to many, since the high on Saturday was 85º.

But some couldn't resist eating outside in the breeze, under the tent.

All the desserts could not fit on the designated table.

Almost 80 people attended our Jubilee, and we had quite a few regular attendees and friends who could not come, for various reasons. They were missed. But God brought in many visitors, family, and friends, and we had a wonderful time. The popcorn machine was an attraction, in addition to horse-shoes, apple bobbing, and a corn-hole game. Live music kept everyone clapping and singing about 4:00. At 6:00, after our meal, we enjoyed hearing a message from Rev. Ola Forbes of the PCA church in Chocawinity, NC. An incoming thunderstorm hurried everyone to bring things indoors and clean up. Leftovers, of which there were so many, were saved for our fellowship meal on Sunday. Pastor Christiansen preached on Sunday morning from Leviticus 25 on the hopeful topic of the Year of Jubilee.
The church thanks Pastor Christiansen and all those hard-working people who helped to make this event such a joyous success. What a blessing it is when brothers and sisters in Jesus come together to celebrate God's love for us!
