The Jubilee! Thirty Years of God's Faithfulness

This weekend Pamlico Presbyterian Church celebrated thirty years of God's goodness and faithfulness to us. Through challenges, conflicts, joys, and many seasons of life-- He has remained the focus of our fellowship. We're so thankful that He's sustained our church all these years!
We had a good old-fashioned pig pickin' on Saturday. The men who did the pig arrived at 7:30 AM. The ladies came a bit later. There was plenty of work to do.
Edrae, Joyce, and Jeannette get the deep fryer ship-shape.
Jill and Shane did so much work to make the Jubilee celebration happen.
We're very thankful for them, their sweet spirit of helpfulness, and their smiles.
Willy, Cricket, and Dot enjoyed a front row seat by the pig cooker.
These men tended the pig all day long: Adam, Joe, Shane, and Joe
Our friend Art came from out of town for the day and took pictures.
Morgan, Adrianna, and Julia had fun in the beautiful weather.
Jill, Jennifer, and Jordane organized the kids' face painting and bracelet activities.
These tables were a hit with girls, young and old.
A group of active boys enjoyed the pumpkin bowling.
The pumpkins were a little worse for the wear!
But they knocked down all the pins!
The dress-up photo booth was a hoot. Here's Edrae.
We won't reveal the identity of this grandmother-turned-galactic-villain.
Bette looks classy no matter what she's wearing.
Jordane is all about her kitty cats.
Jill did an instant hair change.
Art's flannel shirt blended right in.
And some outfits were just plain silly.
Morgan sports a cowboy hat rather well.
And what would our day have been like, without adorable Steven to keep us laughing?
Back to the food! The pig was laid out in a massive cast iron cooker for the day, skin side down.
A smaller grill was used for cooking the chicken quarters.
Twenty minutes before serving time, the pig looked like this! The men removed, by hand, all the bones and flesh, and the skin was left on the heat. Several folks enjoyed the ribs with meat attached, and later the skin became "cracklings," salty and very good.

Shane took the meat that Joe had scooped out and given to him, and chopped it up for serving. A spicy vinegar-based dressing livened up the meat, which some ate straight, and some put on buns.
Adam's chickens were delicious.
Here are the men, laboring over the heat at the last minute. They also made hush puppies in a deep fryer. Every single hush puppy was eaten -- they were fabulous!
The ladies set up the serving line in the corridor between the two buildings.
Autumn decorations abounded.
Everyone filed through the sanctuary, along the line, and proceeded to tables both outside and inside.
The air conditioning was inviting to many, since the high on Saturday was 85ยบ.
But some couldn't resist eating outside in the breeze, under the tent.
All the desserts could not fit on the designated table.
Almost 80 people attended our Jubilee, and we had quite a few regular attendees and friends who could not come, for various reasons. They were missed. But God brought in many visitors, family, and friends, and we had a wonderful time. The popcorn machine was an attraction, in addition to horse-shoes, apple bobbing, and a corn-hole game. Live music kept everyone clapping and singing about 4:00. At 6:00, after our meal, we enjoyed hearing a message from Rev. Ola Forbes of the PCA church in Chocawinity, NC. An incoming thunderstorm hurried everyone to bring things indoors and clean up. Leftovers, of which there were so many, were saved for our fellowship meal on Sunday. Pastor Christiansen preached on Sunday morning from Leviticus 25 on the hopeful topic of the Year of Jubilee.
The church thanks Pastor Christiansen and all those hard-working people who helped to make this event such a joyous success. What a blessing it is when brothers and sisters in Jesus come together to celebrate God's love for us!

Announcing Our Jubilee!

Pamlico Presbyterian Church has been planning an important event in our church's life -- a 30th birthday celebration!

We invite all our former members, attendees, and local friends of our church to come on Saturday, October 11, 2014 in the afternoon for a fun time of live music, games, reunion, reminiscing, and great food. Slide shows of our church's history will be available for viewing. Live gospel bluegrass will keep our toes tapping. We'll enjoy a pig-pickin' potluck dinner at 6:00 PM. Please stay until Sunday morning worship when we'll have more special music, a guest speaker in Sunday school, and more fellowship around the table for our usual after-service snack. It will be a wonderful weekend of fun, remembering, and looking forward to all God will do at our church, the church that God built!

Happenings in Our Church's Life

Many important events have occurred in our church's life since last November, 2013.
Our dear friend, elder, and brother in Christ, Louis Spilman, died unexpectedly in November. We miss him, his fervent commitment to the church, and his leadership. Many church members traveled to Fayetteville, NC for his funeral service.
Another dear saint in our church, Richard Ayers, had died in January 2013. His wife Joyce dedicated this new lectern to Richard's memory and for the use of the church. We read the Scriptures from it each Sunday morning. This beautiful piece was hand-crafted by another man in our church, Ron Brunnen.
Each year the churches in Oriental gather for a single Thanksgiving service, a time of rejoicing, unity, shared faith, and praise to God. The various ministers organize and lead this service. Our pastor, Adam Christiansen, delivered the message in November.
For the first time, Pamlico Presbyterian Church held a Thanksgiving meal, inviting anyone to come eat who had no other family gathering to attend. We enjoyed a great meal together with a full table -- a great new tradition for our church.

Immediately on the heels of Thanksgiving, the Advent season began. We bedecked our church with evergreen wreaths and poinsettias.
Our Christmas service, an evening event, included music and Scripture readings, followed by a reception. This Lessons and Carols Service is a custom in our church.
Each year, our church participates in Oriental's "Spirit of Christmas" festival by serving cookies and hot cider at the town dock to those strolling the streets. We sing Christmas carols. This year the good weather and general cheer brought out large crowds and great singing.

At last, spring arrived after a long, unusually cold winter.
Pastor Adam convinced the other local ministers to resurrect an old church tradition in Oriental, a Fifth Sunday Night hymn sing. At the end of March, the community gathered at our church. Every pew was full to bursting. The singing was loud and enthusiastic, and a spirit of excitement and praise seemed to raise the rafters and filled our hearts. Groups and soloists from various churches brought their music. We sang all the old hymns -- "It Is Well" and "How Great Thou Art."
The lovely ladies of our church made cookies and punch.
Our hand chime choir played "Praise to the Lord, the Almighty" and "Jesus Shall Reign."
That service was a true highlight in the life of our church, and the unity and love among the entire Oriental church community.
Pastor Adam had been planning a Seder Meal -- an observance of the Lord's Supper as the Jews did it for so many years -- on Thursday evening before Easter. This is the Lord's Supper as Jesus kept it with his disciples, the week of his death. We set up a single table for everyone. Twenty-eight people attended, so we had to add another table.
Pastor Adam had prepared beforehand the elements of this meal, the parsley and salt water, the horseradish, the sweet nuts and fruit, the matzah bread, the grape juice.
Our pastor broke his leg in a bad bicycle accident only two weeks before, but he did a great job presenting this event to us anyway.
He baked the matzah and broke it for us in the meal.
The meal was leisurely and enjoyable, with participation by everyone.
Children and grandchildren were there to play their parts.

The candle was lit, indicating the light of God in our lives.
We approach Easter Sunday with a sense of excitement and thanksgiving to our God for providing us with a Savior, whom we need so much, and for bringing us into His kingdom as His children. May you find peace and joy in being His child also.

The Moore's Creek Boys

Our November Family Night Supper was a fun affair with great food and lively music from The Moore's Creek Boys. Our own church member,Shane Harris, plays guitar in this bluegrass band.
Then talented men played many old-time worship favorites, and kept us all laughing with jokes and cheer.
Thanks so much to them for this first-class entertainment!
Our next dinner is on December 15, at 6:00 PM, a covered dish Christmas dinner that will follow our Lessons and Carols Christmas Program. Please come! We have very visitor-friendly events!

Our Christmas Program

It's not too early to put this date on your calendars! Pamlico Presbyterian Church will hold its Christmas Program on December 15, 2013, at 6:00 p.m.
The service consists of alternating Lessons and Carols -- Scripture readings and either special music by our handchime choir or vocalists, and congregational carol singing.

Please join us for this special evening celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, the Savior and King who came as a baby, Immanuel, God with us.

A covered-dish congregational meal follows the program. Please plan to stay and enjoy this Christmas meal with us.

It's Shoebox Time!

Is your church sending Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes this year? Our church filled 22 boxes last year, and this year we're going to surpass that number!
This year we purchased boxes from Samaritan's Purse which are just the right size, and already Christmas bright -- red and green.
As the church members brought in their boxes, we stacked them in the fellowship hall. We had 22 boxes, but we weren't finished yet. This year we determined to have a "shoebox party" where we all bring in more items and fill boxes at the church. It's so much fun, and it feels so much like Christmas to be boxing presents together for the children.
Three ladies look over our stash of gifts to see what we lack.
We had separate piles of candy, toys, hygiene items, school supplies, and clothing.
Then on Tuesday evening after Bible study, we each grabbed a box and started to pack it for a child.
Each child should certainly receive a stuffed animal and some candy.
When we were done, we had 42 boxes total! And we have several more still to come in.
Jill packed a box for a boy.
And so did Nick. He's all smiles!
If you have never participated in this wonderful program, consider it. Shoeboxes are collected in churches and community centers all over the country, and overseas. You can pack a single box at home yourself and bring it in, and bring such joy to the heart of a child this Christmas.

Pastor Appreciation

The church members surprised Pastor Adam and his wife with a Pastor Appreciation Dinner on Saturday evening, October 12. Adam and Mary Kathryn were treated to a lovely cake and a basket full of greeting cards from the families of the congregation.
We had our usual sumptuous fare on the dinner line ~
Our cooks in the congregation can sure turn out some beautiful dishes!
October is Pastor Appreciation Month. We are all so thankful for our churches and their pastors!
The Christiansens wish to thank all their dear church members for planning this lovely evening, and for the cake and the corsages on Sunday morning. We love you!
